Holy Rosary Cathedral (646 Richards St, Vancouver)
Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) finished composing his last large work, Messe cum jubilo, Op. 11 shortly after the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council. It remains as a prime example of the excellence of Gregorian chant in Catholic liturgy, as well as the suitability of appropriate twentieth-century music at mass.
Men from throughout the Archdiocese of Vancouver, whether affiliated with a church or not, are invited to join Holy Rosary Cathedral and MOTET to sing for this project. We will be learning and rehearsing the work over five weeks in July and August, culminating with a Traditional Latin Mass on the Feast of the Assumption, a form of liturgy that Duruflé would have attended for most of his life. David Poon and Christopher Suen will be directing.
Rehearsals begin Monday 11 July, 7:00pm, at Holy Rosary Cathedral.
You can listen to a recording of the Gloria on Youtube.
